Sasha made herself scarce as soon as we arrived home from dinner. When there was a knock at the door a few minutes later, I rushed to look through the peephole. Lucas stood there in what had to be a custom-tailored suit, staring back at me with his piercing green eyes. I flipped the locks and flung the door open. Without a word, he pulled me into his arms and buried his face in my hair, inhaling me. His reaction gave me hope our relationship wasn’t over before it started.

“I’ve missed you.” With my head pressed against his chest, the vibration of his rumbled words soothed me.

“I missed you too.”

“Let’s go to your room. You said you had something to tell me, and we need to discuss what kept me away last night.”

“Um, okay.”

I tapped on Sasha’s door as we passed it and said goodnight before pulling Lucas into my room. The only place to sit was the bed, so we were side by side with our backs against the headboard. I was sure his supersonic ears could hear the rapid beat of my heart. I wiped my palms down the front of my jeans. I remained silent, waiting for him to start.

“Why are you so nervous, Juliette?”

“I’m anxious about what I need to tell you. I’m afraid of your reaction. I’ve also been worrying about what you’re going to say. When you didn’t come last night, I thought maybe you’d changed your mind about us.” May as well put it all out there.

He turned to me and clasped my hands in his. “I need you to listen to what I’m about to say. Nothing you say will change how I feel about you. Nothing. As far as the reason I had to cancel last night, it has nothing to do with you or me. Fate brought us together because we’re the perfect match. There will never be another for me. Do you understand?”

He’d rendered me speechless once again and I could only nod.

“Last night, someone dumped a woman’s body behind the club. She’d been murdered and the police closed us down while they investigated. They interviewed all the staff and forbid us to leave until they finished.”

I gasped and covered my mouth with my hand. “What happened to her?”

His eyes clouded as he stared over my shoulder before returning to mine. “A vampire drained her. I am one hundred percent certain it wasn’t a member of my coven. Other than that, I’m clueless right now. When I catch them, they’ll wish for death,” he growled.

His eyes glowed, and I recognized him for the predator he was. “I’m sorry that happened. Have they identified her? Do you have any idea who she was?”

“No, but they’re doing an autopsy and the coroner may be able to figure it out using her prints or dental records. She had no identification on her.”

“That’s so awful. Thank you for telling me, though.” My heart ached for the woman whose life had ended for no reason.
